Desperate Housewives and the Emmy Awards – Part 1

My husband and I both just love watching Desperate Housewives and have not missed one episode since it first debuted. Though the Emmy nominations were not forthcoming after the first season, I still believe the plot twists, mysteries and suspense is some of the best of any show on television at this time.

I, too, grew tired of Andrew’s obnoxiousness and the fights between he and Bree and though I wouldn’t normally be for throwing a child out of the house, I was ever so glad to see her dump him by the roadside and pull away during the second season!

Desperate Housewives offers the viewers a constant array of family problems, diabolical plots by some of the characters, murder mysteries, a character everyone loves to hate (currently Edie Britt played by Nicollette Sheridan), secret affairs, love stories, and family tragedies. It seems to have it all. I cannot understand why, then, that Desperate Housewives began to lose Emmy nominations and hope that this year they will walk away with several winners.

The new season has kicked off with the entry of a new set of mysterious neighbors obviously hiding something sinister that happened to the daughter when she young. The hated Edie has again come between Carlos and Gabby to the point there may be no reconciliation now. Newlyweds, Susan and Mike, have found out they are expecting a baby and it’s yet to be seen if Susan will carry the child to term while Bree is faking her own pregnancy to hide the fact her teenage daughter is pregnant. Meanwhile, Lynette battles cancer and has lost her hair due to chemotherapy and has to deal with her controlling mother who has moved in to take care of her and problems with Tom. The various plots have the makings of an excellent season and I don’t intend to miss a single episode!

Desperate Housewives Has Led to Better Film Opportunities for Teri Hatcher

Today’s revival of Teri Hatcher’s career is definitely owed to the success of the ABC hit series, Desperate Housewives. For many years, the 42-year-old actress seemed to be taking a rather long hiatus, until she landed the role of Susan Mayer on the dramedy.

“A few years ago, when I wasn’t working that much, I never imagined that I would ever be in this spot,” Hatcher said in a conversation with the Chicago Sun-Times over the phone. Today, she has reemerged as one of the biggest television celebrities and has been offered roles in numerous upcoming big screen productions.

“The funny and great thing is the success from the show gives you opportunities in features that you might not have had before,” Hatcher continued. “But at the same time, the show’s schedule makes you unavailable to do the movies you might be chosen for because you’re on a hit show.”

Despite those circumstances, Hatcher still had time to work on Resurrecting the Champ, an upcoming film which became one of summer’s most critically-acclaimed productions. In the film, Hatcher will be playing a woman far from who the clumsy Susan of Desperate Housewives is. She adds that the character is a “smart cookie” executive from an ESPN type of show who has “much more confidence” than Susan or Hatcher herself.

The film is directed by Rod Lurie and will include actors such as Josh Hartnett playing reporter Erik Kerman and Samuel L. Jackson playing former boxing champion Bob Satterfield.

Although Hatcher enjoys filmmaking, she is still very happy with working on Desperate Housewives, which returns for its fourth season in the fall.

“Honestly, I love my day job. I still think filming the series is fun and inspiring. I never can guess where they’re going with the scripts and what they will have Susan doing this season. That’s part of the joy of it,” she said.

As for Desperate Housewives’ season four, Hatcher said, “It’s actually very tough for Susan. Last season there were two very handsome guys in Susan’s life, but no one really wants to know how it all eventually turns out for Susan. Will she be happy with Mike? Will she stop tripping over stuff? All of my friends ask, but I constantly say, ‘You really don’t want to know.’ Why ruin the surprise?”

Joy Lauren a Far Cry From Desperate Housewives Character

A big challenge came to Joy Lauren in the form of her character on ABC’s Desperate Housewives, as she was to play a woman at the center of the show’s teen pregnancy storyline. Upon realizing this, she knew that she was up for a real challenge.

“[It was] definitely something I’ve never experienced before â€” I’m not really angst-ridden and I’m not pregnant â€” so it was definitely a stretch for me to play!” Lauren, who plays Bree Hodge’s (Marcia Cross) daughter, Danielle, said in an interview with TV Guide.

Despite taking on the challenge, however, Lauren has a positive attitude towards playing the character, as it allows her to experience “ll sorts of things that you wouldn’t do normally.”

Joy Lauren began acting at the age of seven, and by the time she was 11, her mother, Nan Jorgensen moved her to Los Angeles so that Lauren could pursue an acting career. Jorgensen has been a truly supportive mother, and does not tie Lauren down.

“She always gave me a really long leash. So I never had the desire to go out there and do anything crazy because she never told me I couldn’t. It’s like, you’re a teenager, you need to experience things,” Lauren explained. “But if you get into trouble, you’re going to stay at home in your room for the rest of your life! If I messed up, she’d take that all away.”

Lauren’s first appearance on television was in 2002, when she appeared as guest on the crime drama, The Division. Despite working very hard in the entertainment industry, she still values her studies.

“I was 14 when I [passed] the California high-school proficiency exam,” Lauren told TV Guide. “But I continued taking some classes because I wanted to get a good education.”

Lauren’s character, Danielle is also focusing on her academics, as she agreed to go to college while Bree and stepfather Orson takes care of the baby. However, not much has been happening in that storyline as the writers’ strike still continues, a crisis that Lauren is fully aware of.

“Of course I want to get back to work as soon as possible because I love what I do, [but] we’re very supportive of the writers and feel like they need to take the time to get what they deserve,” she said. “It’s something they need to stand their ground on.”

TV show reviews: Desperate Housewives – Part 2

I watched the first episode of Desperate Housewives because I had seen a write up on the program in my TV page and I have to say it appealed to me. However, because the programme was shown on Wednesdays, I didn’t get to see every episode so I was delighted to find that I had been given Series one on DVD by my parents for Christmas.

Packaging

This DVD set comes in a white case with a picture of the desperate housewives on the front. The characters are dressed in white and look stunning in the pictures. The title is written above their picture in red writing.

Inside the case are 6 separate DVDs containing the 22 episodes from the 1st series.

Price

This was bought for me as a present but I have done a bit of research and this DVD would cost you 24.99 on play.com and on amazon it would cost you 23. You can get this box set cheaper from the ‘new and used’ section on both of the above websites.

Storyline

I don’t want to give too much away about the plot of what happens in Desperate Housewives and to be honest, there is so much going on in every episode that it would be difficult to detail it all in a review anyway.

There are 5 main ‘Desperate Housewives’ who all live on Wisteria Lane which from the outside, looks like a very prefect place to live.

In the 1st episode we met Mary-Alice Young who narrates throughout the whole series. Mary-Alice Young appeared to lead a perfect life, that is, until one day, she is found dead in her own house and appears to have shot herself in the head. The Desperate Housewives start to question exactly what was wrong in Mary-Alice’s life for her to end it. Throughout the serious, the desperate housewives discover various things which make them question the truth about the death of their friend.

As well as the above continued theme in the series, you also get to learn about the past and present lives of the desperate housewives as well as meeting a few new faces that have moved to Wisteria Lane.

I will stop here as saying much more than this will begin to give away parts of the storyline. However with each explanation of the characters, I will include parts of the storyline that are relevant to each character – hopefully without giving away too much of the storyline.

Desperate Housewives is like a large tub of chocolate ice cream- you know it’s bad for you, you know that it will be sickeningly sweet, but you have to have it.

I have to say that I love Desperate Housewives, and I’m only a little ashamed to admit that. Life is so stressful and the only thing that makes me unwind is watching the Susan/Mike saga or some new neighbor hide a secret dead body.

I can understand people pooh-poohing DH, it is incredibly cheesy and over the top, but it is in the same vein as Dallas or Dynasty of the eighties. It is supposed to be over the top, it is supposed to be unbelievable.

I mean if we were really watching a realistic portrayal of housewives, we would be watching Wife Swap. I doubt anyone would tune in to watch a real life Lynnette try to get a stain out of Tom’s shirt or watch Susan decide what color to paint her dining room.

Realism is not what DH is about, it is about escapism. It is about women who live a flamboyant lifestyle and have neighbors who would kill to protect their family.

I can never decide who is my favorite character in DH. I love Gabi with her witty one lines and the way that she adores herself. Susan is great as all she really does is fall over and put her foot in her mouth. Lynnette is a realistic portrayal of a mother at her worst and her strength and sass just make her character. The cleanaholic Bree is what every woman aspires to- strong, confident, unyielding and clever. Even trampy Edie gets my vote when she lets a quip slip.

I do realize that fans of the show are getting tired of similar plot lines and the never ending will they/won’t they of Susan and Mike, but I think Marc Cherry has been very creative in the last two series. Particularly with the emergence and demise of Norah- Lynnette’s arch nemesis- and the Gabi and Carlos divorce.

Desperate Housewives will continue to shock and amaze me, while Edie still sells house on Wisteria Lane to sinister neighbors.

Desperate Housewives Star Assumes Married Name

Housewife of the year Eva Longoria, who married NBA player Tony Parker on the controversial 07-07-07 date is now ready to take on her husband’s name. The Desperate Housewives star has finally decided to go with the tradition of assuming her husband’s family name.

“I actually completely adopted the new name and I love it – I’m a Parker now!” Longoria said, excited. “I love every bit of it – I like the tradition of changing the name.”

The actress added that she has been getting used to being called Mrs. Parker in Texas .

“I’ve been getting used to being called Mrs. Parker for a while now. It’s really nice to hear,” Longoria-Parker said. “Especially in Texas , everyone is really respectful there.”

In other news concerning the bronzed beauty, the woman from Wisteria Lane will be starring in a new comedy film. Longoria-Parker will be joining American Pie’s Jason Biggs and Boston Legal’s Monica Potter in the film, Lower Learning. The movie features the Desperate Housewives star playing a school inspector following the trail of a suspicious elementary school principal, played by Rob Corddry. She then pairs up with Jason Biggs’ character, with whom she formerly had a relationship with. Jason Biggs’ character is a former police officer-turned-vice principal.

In other Desperate Housewives news, Jesse Metcalfe, who plays Longoria-Parker’s occasional onscreen lover is also headed for the big screen as he is currently working on the film, The Other End of the Line, for MGM and Ashok Amritaj’s Hyde Park Film. Metcalfe’s co-stars include India ’s Shriya Saran and Tara Sharma.

The Other End of the Line follows an Indian call center agent from Mumbai as she heads to San Francisco to finally meet the man she fell in love with through the wires. The film, which is currently in a 40-day shooting schedule in India , will later be heading to California and New York to shoot the remaining sequences. Release date for the film in the U.S. is set at the end of 2008.

Four years ago, there was a new show called Desperate housewives. Desperate Housewives debuted to high ratings, acclaim from the tv reviewers, and a slew of Emmy nominations. Desperate Housewives was the show that everyone was talking about. After that, it seemed as if the cast of Desperate Housewives couldn’t buy an Emmy nomination. In the second season, Desperate Housewives struggled, the ratings were still good, but the television reviewers said that the show its self lost a huge amount of its creativity. Also, many people disagreed with some of the problems between Bree(played by Marcia Cross and her son Andrew. For example: in one episode, Andrew seduced Bree’s then boyfriend in order to get even with her. After the bad reviews and the lackluster second season came Emmy season, Desperate Housewives didn’t get one major Emmy nomination. Some people disagreed with this, but many people agreed, saying that “Desperate Housewives just wasn’t that great this year”. Most people expected a few of the actors from Desperate housewives to get nominated, but they didn’t. Marc Cherry(the creator of Desperate Housewives) said that it wasn’t a big deal to him because he was in a much better place than he was before the show started. Well, the Emmy disappointment came to an end and the new season of Desperate Housewives started. The third season received a healthy amount of buzz prior to its premier, there was even a scene liked onto the internet. The third season was said to be one of the best, next to the first season. But, like all the other television shows, Desperate Housewives lost a pretty big part of its audience. This season of the show brought back the excitement , but the ratings continued to go down. When the third season of Desperate Housewives came to an end, and Emmy nomination were announced, there was only one major nomination. Felicity Huffman was the only HOUSEWIFE nominated for an Emmy. Hollywood was shocked, Desperate Housewives made a huge comeback in its third season and everyone thought that it should be honored, but it wasn’t. The fourth season is set to premiere sometime in September(of 2007) we will see if it can once again take over the Emmy Awards. The Emmy Awards have been known to snub television shows when they really deserve to be nominated, so its quite possible that Desperate Housewives could get a slew of nominations next year.
