Commentary: Celebrity gossip magazines – Part 6

Celebrity magazines catch our eye as we wait in lines at the store, a task we do not expect the stars to do. Yet, each time I peruse a US Weekly or some other publication, I see pictures of the rich and famous shopping, enjoying sporting events, waiting and driving. These are ordinary activities and I wonder what else goes in the real daily life of a big star?
This is just one question I wish the magazines would cover when interviewing stars. Forget the glamour, makeup, fashions and gossip; I want to know what makes a star tick? What defines the person? What part of the day is their favorite and why?
The public rarely gets the real story behind the wealth and scrutiny of the stars. We see the gorgeous dresses and figures, and we see the drama. Tears, fights, divorces and wars of words continually find a spot on the front covers of celebrity magazines. What is behind the drama and the astonishing sensationalism?
From the curious questions like, what time do they usually get up, to what routines do they follow and why, my mind wants to know. I know they will star in the next big movie or sing an amazing song. We hear that all of the time. What about the person behind the celebrity?
The public could get a feel for the person behind the celebrity if magazines featured whole stories instead of one or two lines about the next big project or a current love interest. People, especially fans, connect with a star when he or she feels real to them. While a full accounting of a star’s life is not required, a connection does require mutual experiences. These may include substance abuse, overcoming confidence issues and how to deal with the pressures of life.
Celebrities are normal people with jobs we view as amazing. Yet, when the day is finished, they are still regular people with fears, hopes, dreams and issues. Just like anyone else, they are human. And if I ever get the chance to interview one, here is a list of questions I hope to ask.
What defines you as a person?
What is your favorite day and why?
How do family concerns affect your job?
Why do you think you can make a difference?
When do you find yourself separated from your real being and that of a star?
Where do you like to go for peace and relaxation?
Who is your favorite celebrity and why?
How can fans learn more about the real person versus the star?
Why should celebrities seek ways for making the world a better place?
