I have the advantage by not being an American in being able to rationalize the media hyperbola of events surrounding the Paris Hilton phenomenon of being “famous for being famous” by being separated from another phenomenon, that of the expectation of opinion. I believe what I choose to believe. I am also an intelligent and analytical person who possesses the sharp perceptive faculties which enable me to gain some real insight into the making of a star by the intangible factors that contribute to the esthesis of a gullible American public.
Like it or not, Paris Hilton is a star whether or not she is self-made, molded by celebrity gossip tabloids, or promoted by an agency. Her status cannot be denied. She’s here, so get used to it. The question that appears to be uppermost in people’s minds is, “why?”.
Paris comes from intelligent parentage and that attribute is passed on to her via their genes. She is a smart girl and no more or less talented than most of America’s favorite celebrities. Her father owns a huge hotel chain so naturally she was destined for the limelight if only because of the public exposure which that fact alone determined for her, never mind that they live in Los Angeles and have been hobnobbing with celebrities for more than one generation. She has been seen passing through Hilton Hotel lobbies the world over with her family all of her life and this made her subject to the lecherous leers and ogling eyes of a tourist class who could only imagine what she was destined for when she turned eighteen. Even as a child she would have been labeled a spoiled brat just because of the place her family occupied among the minions of a buying public.
Her status today is actually a shelter of sorts. The publicity that naturally associates with her identity became a formula for celebrity. She never had any choice as such and if anything the positive effect of this is that she is afforded a greater sense of security for it. Her adult life wasn’t planned for her, it was thrust upon her unwittingly. The character that she now is and with which she is now identified is the product of an overzealous sub-culture’s thirst for any and all information about this certain heiress from that rich family. The fact is that there are people who earn a lucrative living contriving dirt and taking original photographs for immediate publication in second and third class celebrity rags which convolute and distort the facts to make them more lurid to a lecherous
